Ballroom ABCs Frequently Asked Questions
When can I start the class?
You can start on ANY Tuesday on the monthly schedule that says Swing 1, Foxtrot 1, Rumba 1, Salsa 1, Tango 1 or Waltz 1. In other words, you are welcome to join us as long as it's the first class of that dance!
Do I need a partner to join?
No. Singles and couples are always welcomed. We do require you to pre-register so that the ratio of leaders to followers is always close to 50/50. We can't always guarantee a fully balanced class, but we do our best. Our instructors are there to partner extra leaders or followers.
How should I dress and do I need to buy dance shoes?
Just come dressed casual and be ready to have fun! There's no need to buy dance shoes at this stage. We do recommend a leather soled shoe of your choice so that you can move easily on the floor.
Do you ask people to change partners frequently? I've heard I'll learn more quickly like that.
Yes, and YES! We do rotate partners. If you prefer not to rotate, you may dance with just your own partner. We would recommend that you try rotating partners since it's been proven that couples that change partners throughout classes learn ballroom dance more quickly, execute patterns with more confidence and ease and retain information longer. It also makes dancing with your partner outside of class more enjoyable!
What if I can't take all 10 weeks in a row, or miss a class?
No problem! You have one full year (from the day you register) to take the 10 lessons. for example, if you miss the Salsa lessons because you had to work or go out of town, you can take them during another cycle when Salsa comes around again. The ABC classes are taught on an ongoing basis and the cycle repeats every 10 weeks.
Can I come and watch a class and see how you teach first?
Absolutely! In fact, we recommend that our guests come and check us out first. We have seating along the dance floor and students frequently brings friends and relatives to watch them take a lesson.
What is the best way to register for a class?
Simply call the studio and talk to our helpful reception staff, they'll walk you through the very easy process and answer any questions that you have.
I've taken Beginners classes before, can I join another class instead?
Yes. We ask that you make an appointment to talk to one of our instructors for a few minutes. It's free and allows us to assess where you best belong. You are also welcome to come observe a class first to see how we teach and the level of material that is covered.
I tend to forget half of what I've learned the moment I walk out the door. Any suggestions?
YES! About 80% of students are EXACTLY like you! The same percentage of people repeat the class a second, or even third, time. It's automatically half price when you repeat the class - as they say, 'repetition is the mother of all skill'.
I feel intimidated just thinking about going to a dance studio to take lessons. Do you have any comments to ease my fears?
We know how you feel. One of our strengths is that we know how to put people at ease and make classes a lot of fun. You will be surrounded by people that initially feel the same way you do. We guarantee that you will have fun learning. As we mentioned before, you are welcome to come watch a class first - we're sure you'll feel much more at ease after seeing a class in action.
I want to buy the lessons as a gift - is there a gift card for this class?
Certainly! We sell a lot of these and have them available at the studio, or we can send it to you. The gift card will have a one year expiration date on it. That means you have one year from the date of purchase to use it to register for a class. You then have one year from the date of registration to finish the 10 weeks.
